On the Tensions of Dealing With People

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

On July 21st until the 27th my roomie redacted was hosting his parents, his youngest sister and his aunt. At my house. To describe it nicely… they cramped my style. Of course they were nice and mostly pleasant people but the mere fact that they were inhabiting the space that is normally shared by just two could not be ignored.

Normally, I place little restraint on the things that I say or do or wear while wandering around my house. Often times I find myself walking about making strange noises, because they amuse me so, wearing nothing but my drawers at three in the morning on a weeknight. This type of activity is perfectly fine under normal circumstances but certainly not so when there are four strangers sleeping all about my abode.

Having to spend the extra energy to consciously watch what I said, did, and even wore was a trying task. My limit on such careful attention to what I say and do is at most two days. After that the stresses of “being nice” started to get to me. I can not recall how long it has been since I have felt so mentally exhausted. Couple that with the fact that I was still recovering from the aforementioned cold and those are the perfect ingredients for an unhappy Me.

It is nice to have my place back to me and only having to deal with one person instead of five.

Woe is me!

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

Oh, woe is me! While driving around all of northern Illinois yesterday I had a tickle in my throat and in the early afternoon the muscles in my back started to ache. I figured it had to be due to the aging driver seat in my 1994 Ford Taurus and the lack of air conditioning in my car. Early in the day my forehead had started to itch and burn just the slightest bit. Without looking too closely it was easy to attribute those sensations to going out in to the heat and having sweat evaporate off my head.

Fast forward to 8:00 this morning when, much to my surprise, I found that my throat hurt exceedingly. After trying a few things to see if I could quash the feeling in my throat with a little food and drink it became apparent that this was not a temporary situation. A quick check on WedMD offered up some possible maladies. Strep Throat and a Sore Throat seemed to fit the symptoms with me leaning a bit towards the possibility of Strep Throat. After calling in to work to let them know I would not be coming in for fear that I would get everyone sick I went back to bed until 7 PM when I was rudely interrupted by my roommate REDACTED. Now I am wide awake, popping cough drops like candy and contemplating the benefits of using this situation as a springboard to my eventual cessation of smoking tobacco.

Wireless fun for everyone!

For quite some time I have been unhappy with the service offerings from my wireless provider, Cingular AT&T. I have been looking for something that is more akin to a phone with PC like functionality but without the steep price. I had been considering many Linux based smartphones, the Neo1973, and others. My roomie found Helio and off we went to find a place where we could play with the phones. After 2 minutes I was convinced I had to have the Helio Ocean. So far so good. Now, if I can only figure out how to add the Star Trek communicator sound when I slide the phone open.
